This article about the Top 10 Anti-Aging Foods at WomenFitness.net is not specifically about the Daniel Fast, but will explain some of the benefits of the Daniel Diet foods.
"Keep your calorie consumption and saturated fat intake down; eat plenty of wholegrain, oily fish and fresh fruit and vegetables; and cut down on salt and sugar. In addition to these general guidelines, there are specific foods that have a roll in anti-aging and that you should regularly include in your diet."
"I went on the Daniel Fast only eating fruit and vegies for 21 days. During that Fast I realised I wanted to honour God with my body weight. I have made serious changes to my diet. Walk 4-5 days a week. Spend time with Him in the Word and Prayer daily. It means being really serious about a relationship with Him, and wow what benefits!!! Praise Him!!"
Thank you for sharing your encouraging words Trish. Allow me to add a couple Scriptures from The Message version of the Bible that reinforce your point.
It is not for our own glory or vanity that we are careful what we eat. It is for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 MSG "So eat your meals heartily, not worrying about what others say about you--you're eating to God's glory, after all, not to please them. As a matter of fact, do everything that way, heartily and freely to God's glory."
Men and women alike need to take care of our bodies, for they are the temple of the Holy Spirit!
1 Corinthians 6:19 MSG "Or didn't you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don't you see that you can't live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you."
Therefore, we must take good care of our bodies. Many common diseases are easily prevented with good nutrition and exercise.
I am writing becuase a friend of mines is doing a 40 day Daniel fast at her church and I have decided to do it with her. The only thing is I don't understand why it is 40 days instead of 21, seing as how Daniel only fasted for 21 days. Also the church keeps making reference to when Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before being handed over to his enemys. Shouldn't this be called the Jesus fast instead of the Daniel fast? Why is the church fasting for so long and referencing it as a Daniel fast? I have been praying and trying to stay faithful to the fast but this part is a little confusing. I appreciate and thank u for your time.
Good question Akhilah! People have been doing the equivalent of the Daniel Fast for the Lenten season for over 1,000 years. Lent is the time of fasting in the liturgical churches, like Episcopalian, Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Anglican and others. The season is actually more than 40 days, but they do not normally fast on Sundays, in honor of the Resurrection of Jesus. So there are 40 days of fasting, plus Sundays when they don't fast.
There are two Daniel Fasts in the book of Daniel. Chapter 1 is about a ten day fast. Chapter 10 is about a 21 day fast. Some people may choose to do a three day fast or even a day time fast. It is good for beginners to try shorter durations for the first times they do a partial fast or total fast.
It is common for pastors to teach about the 40 day total fast of Jesus during this season, because it is the same number of days. However, we won't get handed over to Satan at the end! Rather, we will celebrate the victory we have over Satan, because of the humble and sinless death and powerful and victorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
A coworker came to work and announced that her church was going on a 21 day fast and it would consist of Fruit and Veggies and she challenged us to participate. I thought she must be losing her mind to think that I could survive for 21 days eating only fruit and veggies. Nevertheless, I did it. At first, my food tasted really bland because I wasn't using any seasonings and I wasn't creative with my menu. After we compared our menu's, they laughed at me and said I could use seasonings for my food and they offered some suggestions. I didn't want to lose cool points with the Lord and be less anointed if I broke any rules. Well, this turned out to be one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I've lost 30lbs, my blood pressure and cholesterol is normal and I've maintained for 2yrs! Ernice
I'm starting the Daniel Fast tomorrow, for the first time. I have been getting myself ready for over a month.. I no longer drink regular coffee (only 1 mug of decaf in the mornings) , so when I start just drinking just water tomorrow, I will not have any withdrawel headaches. Plus, I bought a bunch of fruits and veggies today. I've eaten eggs for so long, that it' going to be strange to not start my day with one, but I'm confident that oatmeal and fresh fruit will help get me through my breakfast changes :D Rose
Listen, the Daniel fast is not a diet. No fast is a diet. Careful... Joy
Thank you Joy, you raise an important question.
We use the term "diet" in the general sense meaning "the food you decide to eat." We never promote it as a weight loss diet, like the cabbage diet. In Daniel 1:15, Daniel and his friends were "fatter in flesh" after only ten days! :-)
Many more people write us to say it is not a fast, because you are allowed to eat food. They don't understand that there are partial fasts and total fasts. So we say Daniel Diet Fast to help these people understand that this is a partial fast.
However, most people do lose weight on the Daniel Fast Diet, because they are avoiding the junk foods that made them fat. If you remove only white sugar and high fructose corn syrup from your diet, you will consume hundreds fewer calories per day.
Every 100 calories you eat require one mile to walk off. An average soda is 180 calories. That means after a 12 oz. soda you need to walk an extra 1.8 miles. Very few people do, so they store the fat on their bodies.
We promote the Daniel Fast Diet as a partial fast for spiritual breakthrough. One blessing or spiritual breakthrough for many is self control. It results in weight loss, because of their rejection of junk foods on a permanent basis.
