Dan 10:3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
The following quote is from Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible. If you cannot download the free Bible and commentaries at e-Sword.net, You can purchase a CD of Commentaries at Amazon.com.
I ate no pleasant bread - Margin, “bread of desires.” So the Hebrew. The meaning is, that he abstained from ordinary food, and partook of that only which was coarse and disagreeable.
Neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth - That is, he lived on bread or vegetables. It is not to be inferred from this that Daniel ordinarily made use of wine, for it would seem from Dan. 1: that that was not his custom. What would appear from this passage would be, that he practiced on this occasion the most rigid abstinence.
Neither did I anoint myself - The use of unguents was common in the East (see the notes at Mat_6:17), and Daniel here says that he abstained during these three weeks from what he ordinarily observed as promoting his personal comfort. He gave himself up to a course of life which would be expressive of deep grief. Nature prompts to this when the mind is overwhelmed with sorrow. Not only do we become indifferent to our food, but it requires an effort not to be indifferent to our dress, and to our personal appearance.
Hello, Can one eat Olive Oil on the Daniel Fast? Thanks, Cathy
Thanks for your e-mail Cathy.
Olives are on the foods to eat list. We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or vegetable oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter. Don't use olive oil for high heat frying!

With the Daniel's Fast; the dried beans do you eat them raw or do you cook them and once you cook them do you eat them only or can I mix the vegetables together? And will they be more beneficent if I eat them one vegetable at a time or if I mix them? Carlos
Thanks for your question Carlos. You can cook, mix and eat the allowed foods any way you like. If you fry foods, like in a wok or pan, just use as little oil as possible. Try to us healthy oils, no animal fat. Don't deep fry foods!

I am just curious as to why you can't have fried foods... especially if you fry them in olive oil or vegetable oil. Dianna
Hi Dianna, thanks for your question. You can eat some fried foods. Elmer Towns is the author of the Fasting For Spiritual Breakthrough Daniel Fast Diet. He clearly states that we should avoid "margarine, shortening, animal fat, high fat products." So we are allowed to fry foods with a little oil, but we should avoid deep fat frying, which is definitely too much oil.

Don't use olive oil for frying, it cannot handle the heat.

Dear fellow christian, thank you for this opportunity to ask questions.
My Question: I know about the Dianel fast. I did engage in some day of Daniel fast and some days into the fast I started experiencing some pain on the inner part of my tongue. It makes it reasonably painful for me to swallow saliver, any explain why? please reply.
Stay blessed in Jesus name Amen Jim
We're sorry to hear about your pain Jim. That is not a common side effect of detoxifying your body, but it is possible. You should consult with your health professionals. Let them know you are doing a Vegan Diet with no sugar or caffeine. Those are the two that cause the most side effects, including body pain and headache. Let us know what you find out, so we can share it with our other Daniel's Fast friends.

My wife and I are on the Daniel's Fast for three days now. I am doing great, but my wife is have a great deal of pain from her lower back all the way through her legs (both sides). Is this a normal side effect?
Alvin
Thanks for your e-mail Alvin.
We're sorry to hear of that your wife isn't well. We've never heard of back or leg pain as a side effect of the Daniel Fast Diet. It would be best to contact your medical professional/doctor. Let them know that you are on the 3rd day of a vegan diet. If there is a connection, please let us know!
Hope this is helpful.
Let's pray: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the faith You're giving Alvin and his wife to trust in You to do the Daniel Fast. We pray that you would heal his wife and remove the cause of her pain. In Jesus holy name we pray. Amen
Update on Sat, 1 Mar 2008
Thank you so much for your prayers...my wife is feeling better. Based on what I was told from other sources, my wife is experiencing some detox effects from caffeine, sugar, and other chemicals. The symptom is considering quite normal and should disappear within a week. Hope this information is helpful to other people who are having the similar problem.
God Bless,
Alvin
Thanks for your follow-up Alvin. We're all glad to hear your wife is feeling better. Your wife's detox side effects of Daniel's Fast Diet re-enforce how dangerous these chemicals can be for some of us.
