Is Daniel Fast a Diet?

Weightloss pyramid.
Weight loss pyramid via Wikipedia
Listen, the Daniel fast is not a diet. No fast is a diet. Careful... Joy
Thank you Joy, you raise an important question.

We use the term "diet" in the general sense meaning "the food you decide to eat." We never promote it as a weight loss diet, like the cabbage diet. In Daniel 1:15, Daniel and his friends were "fatter in flesh" after only ten days! :-)

Many more people write us to say it is not a fast, because you are allowed to eat food. They don't understand that there are partial fasts and total fasts. So we say Daniel Diet Fast to help these people understand that this is a partial fast.

However, most people do lose weight on the Daniel Fast Diet, because they are avoiding the junk foods that made them fat. If you remove only white sugar and high fructose corn syrup from your diet, you will consume hundreds fewer calories per day.

Every 100 calories you eat require one mile to walk off. An average soda is 180 calories. That means after a 12 oz. soda you need to walk an extra 1.8 miles. Very few people do, so they store the fat on their bodies.

We promote the Daniel Fast Diet as a partial fast for spiritual breakthrough. One blessing or spiritual breakthrough for many is self control. It results in weight loss, because of their rejection of junk foods on a permanent basis.

4 Quick Preparation Tips

1. Start looking at labels and doing your shopping before fasting!
My first few days were a challenge. I was not used to reading the food labels and making sure I packed better lunches. Man was that work!!! My menu? Most of my items came from a semi-health food store. -Alison

2. Check out Jentezen Franklin's fasting information!
I will be once again joining Jentezen Franklin for the 21-day corporate fast on Jan. 6th?? (it may be a different date this year), and I look so forward to God's great power over my prayer requests and in favor of my dear family for growth in Jesus Christ to glorify His holy Name. God bless you all! -Susie
Thanks for sharing Jentezen Franklin's fasting information with us Susie! I would also recommend downloading his excellent November 2008 Connection magazine guide about Fasting. If you click on the link, you can download Jentezen Franklin's free PDF version of Connection. It has many pages of helpful advice.

3. Start a journal or notebook
Its a time I reflect on my realationship with God.Pray about it and know why you are doing it, what you want to achieve in the fast. Keep a note book to record your reflections, meditations, your lows and your highs etc. -Helen
Start your Daniel Fast notebook now, before your fast, with your prayer requests, goals and ideas. Prayer Journals at Amazon.com

4. Begin praying before your fast!
I personally like to start praying about a month before the fast. I have only done 21 day no food total fasts, so I am not an expert Daniel Fast respondant. I do know that when I start a fast without praying first, I usually fail. -Eddie
Thanks for your emphasis on prayer before fasting Eddie!

Want to eat cleaner

Praise God! Thank you for having this site it's a blessing. I'm want to do the Daniel Fast, I just heard of this. I also want to eat "cleaner" no meat. I was wondering does anyone ever say how much weight they've lost? I'm 5'6 and 150lbs. But I want to fast without telling anyone. I don't want to deal with it. If I do fast and look sick or my eyes sunken in I'll have to tell on myself. Please let me know. I want more of God and I feel that this is the starting point for me to start my "walk" with God. Adriana
Thanks for your encouragement Adriana. The Daniel Fast is an excellent way to improve your walk with God and enjoy spiritual breakthrough. We think it is also a healthy diet. Some folks have written to say they lost a lot a weight.

If readers lost weight doing the Daniel Fast, please leave a comment so we can hear about it. You don't have to log in or start an account. Just enter your name or use anonymous.

Thanks,
Mike

Like a Ton of Bricks: Daniel Fast

Good Evening Farho's,

I first want to thank you for creating such an easy to read web site that is so inviting. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Moments ago, I was on my face, hands and knees, crying out to God in prayer for the healthy recovery of one of my best friends. Exactly one week ago, he was involved in a very bad car accident that has left him unconscious though responsive, in ICU. I was praising God for the blessings he has heaped on me and my family, and asking for God's blessing over my friend and his family, as well as his salvation. That's when the thought hit me like a ton of bricks: Daniel Fast.

Is it acting in faith, in accordance with God, to do a Daniel fast for a friends recovery and salvation? An urgent reply is greatly appreciated.
Caroline
Thank you for your encouragement Caroline.

Fasting with an attitude of love and to God's glory, is always in accordance with His will. We strongly encourage you to do the Daniel Fast and to pray for the healing of your friend. Let your life overflow with thanks to God for the healing, even before it happens. Unfortunately, our timing isn't always God's timing. Even Daniel prayed long and hard for 21 days for God to move His hand, but the spiritual battle took time and the answer was slow to come. Daniel 10:13 At other times, God answers immediately.

Trust me, it was a sacrifice

Thank you for your follow through. I am most impressed. Your web site is excellent, as is. Very 'user friendly', as they say. I credit it and the Lord (not necessarily in that order! You understand. :-)) for helping through my first extended - 5 day - Daniel fast. Next time I might go longer. Even though you are eating pretty well (i.e., healthily) on this fast, I didn't realize how important less healthy foods/beverages were to me. Trust me, it was a sacrifice. I was glad when the 5 days were over! I also want to thank you for your encouragement and prayer prior to my fast. It surprised me at how much that meant to me. I truly felt the Lord in it. As for outcome, only God knows that. I am blessed every day, but have not seen the immediate evidence of the focus of my fast. But, then, that's the definition of faith, isn't it?!

God directed and arranged my schedule

I would like to first thank God, for placing this website on your heart. It was a great resource of recipes, testimonies, and words of encouragement. During my time of fasting, God has directed and arranged my schedule. You see, I’m a stay-at-home mom that home-schools. I was struggling with my prayer time, reading the bible, just having time to commune with the Father. During and after the Daniel Fast I feel rejuvenated, rested, see things more clearly and my joy has been replenished. God has not only changed my schedule to spend time with him, but he has also, given me time to join a women’s bible study group. God is surely Awesome.
