Sally found Brown Rice Pasta

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that there is pasta that is made from brown rice now. The brand is Tinkyada Pasta Joy Ready and it's very much like wheat pasta in texture and taste. The ingredients listed is: stone-ground brown rice, rice bran, and water. It is Kosher Certified also.

Just thought you might want to look into it.

Also, it says in Daniel 1 that he ate this way through out the king's reign.

Thanks for the site,
Sally
Thank You Sally. Folks will be looking for this product in their stores. The photo is from their website at www.tinkyada.com. Bon appetit.

Marion's Preparation Tips

As a Daniel Fast veteran, I prepare for the Fast by cutting down on foods that I will be eliminating during the fast. I know it will be hard during the holidays. But, if not now, then right after the Christmas holiday, start cutting back on sweets, dairy, meats, breads, etc. Once your body starts having less of these things in its system, it won't miss them so much.

I also start gathering foods that I know I will be eating (nuts, no sugar applesauce, cooking vegetables and freezing them, etc.)

Start planning your menu
plans of foods that you can have. This way your mind is not fixed on what you can't have because you already have things set up. I find that I stay more committed this way.

For spiritually preparation, you can go on a "denial" fast here and there (ie: don't eat until after 4pm or don't eat from 12noon one day til 12noon the next day). Start getting your mind and body disciplined. Increase your prayer time and studying the word.

I find once I start disciplining myself, praying and studying the word more, the more "in-tune" I am with God, and the more I can hear Him talking to me and leading me.

I hope this helps!!!

May you all be successful in your consecration to the Lord!

Be Blessed!!!
Thanks for your great tips Marion!

Thanks for your wise words

Thank you so much for your Godly wisdom. On Thurs. night, God spoke to me about doing a 24- day Daniel fast. I have fasted a few times before, but knew I needed more information to do this well. Reading through your info and question/answer section has answered a lot for me. I know that dairy needs to be out for me. I was eating butter, and need to stop that. I also ate white rice today because it was in the fridge, and after two days of mostly fruit with veggies, I needed something more solid. I am glad to know I can eat some of my homemade bread and potatoes. I will also be glad to add some light dressing, or oil and lemon to my salads.
Thank you again for your wise words.
Your sister in Christ, Debbie
Thank you for your kind words Debbie. We appreciate hearing from you.

What about whey?

What about products that have whey? I didn't know what whey was when I went shopping for food for the Daniel Fast. When I purchased the foods for my Fast I made sure that it had no egg or milk and sugars. But I have noticed some of them had whey in it. So I decided to look up what it is and it is that watery clear liquid that separates itself from Milk. You will find it in yogarts, cottage cheese and other milk products. So after researching I found out that it is plasma separated from the milk itself when it curddles. So now I don't know if this is allowed since so many products include this. Should I consider this an animal product since it comes from milk which does come from animals. If you have any information about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and G-d Bless!
Jasmine
You are right, Jasmine. We are avoiding all animal products, and whey is an animal dairy product.

Avoiding tea, salt and raw sugar

Greeting in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am very suprised to see that a few of the recipes on your site have ingredidients that are not in complient with the daniel fast ie. The Daniel Fast did not have any types of sugar. No not even raw sugar. and I was also suprised to see salt and seasoning salt? A fast is not supposed to be pleasurable. It is to afflict our flesh and soul. Last but not least yes teas are herbs but they have caffeine in them and should not be used to replace another flesh driven habit. (coffee and sodas) I pray that the info benefits someone and can be passed on to others who truly desire to fast the way the scripture says to.

May God Bless You All
Cheryl
Thank you for sharing you opinion Cheryl. I'm sure there are many who feel the same as you do. Obviously, I don't agree with your interpretation of Daniel chapter one concerning the  reason for Daniel's Fast/Diet or the foods Daniel allowed and avoided.

However, Cheryl, we affirm and encourage your personal application of the Daniel Fast/Diet. You have the freedom to apply Daniel's Fast according to the grace God gives you through the leading of His Holy Spirit. We also affirm the authority of individuals, groups or churches to do the Daniel Diet/Fast according to their own guidelines. If you are a member of a group or church that requires no salt or raw sugar, then we encourage you to submit to that restriction.

Concerning tea, we encourage only drinking teas without caffeine, in keeping with Elmer Towns' version of the Daniel Fast/Diet in his book Fasting For Spiritual Breakthrough.

Is Daniel's Fast only vegetables?

If you are on a diet or use the Food Guide Pyramid, legumes, nuts, and seeds are considered proteins and placed under the meat category. Why are they allowed on this Fast when meat is not allowed?

Why are whole grains allowed? Why are fruits allowed? I thought the Bible says Daniel ate only vegetables and drank water.

Carolyn
Thank you for your very important question Carolyn. I've avoided giving a long answer to this question for a number of years. I normally just give the short answer that the original language makes it clear that we can eat these foods. Today, I feel led to give you the long answer. As a seminary graduate and a pastor for more than 30 years, I will share my understanding of this issue.

Our problem is that we are tempted to interpret Scriptures according to our own culture and the English text in our particular version of the Bible. However, we need to interpret Scripture by the power of the Holy Spirit, according to the author, audience, context, and original language: Greek or Hebrew. In other words, we need to study the Scriptures to find the meaning of the text for the original author and audience in their language and historical setting.

The Daniel Fast is a non-animal product and non-alcohol diet. Scriptures are from the KJV. The Biblical context helps us to understand what Daniel refused to eat.
Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Therefore, we know that Daniel refused to eat meat and drink wine.
Dan 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
The Bible says that Daniel ate only pulse, which is translated vegetables by some translators.

Let's take a look at Daniel's original words:
Strong's concordance tells us that the Hebrew word is
H2235
זרען זרע
zêrôa‛ zêrâ‛ôn
zay-ro'-ah, zay-raw-ohn'
From H2232; something sown (only in the plural), that is, a vegetable (as food): - pulse.

H2232
זרע
zâra‛
zaw-rah'
A primitive root; to sow; figuratively to disseminate, plant, fructify: - bear, conceive seed, set with, sow (-er), yield.
When we are careful to study these words, we find that Daniel's original Fast allowed all non-animal, non-fermented foods that are planted for harvest. He did this because he did not want to defile himself by disobeying God by eating non-kosher foods or meats that may have been offered to the king's idols.

Now that we've studied the Scriptures and understand better the context of Daniel's Fast Diet, we can move to the final step in a practical Bible study, the application of the lesson to our lives. Most Scriptures have one main meaning or interpretation. We have the freedom to apply the lessons we learn in many ways.

You may decide that your application of this study is that you will drink only bottled spring water and eat only food classified by English speaking Americans as falling into the category of vegetables for a period of 10 days. And I would say that is wonderful and God will bless you with spiritual breakthrough. I would caution you not to continue that diet for an extended amount of time as it could be very dangerous to your health.

Another person may decide that for them their Daniel fast diet will include all the foods we list at our foods to eat page, but that they feel led to apply the fast to their lives and personal nutritional needs by adding fish and poultry products.

Our opinion is that the best solution, especially if you are doing a Daniel Fast Diet as a group, is to follow the advice that we and most other Daniel Fast books and websites give you. Eat the foods we list as allowed to eat and avoid the foods we list to avoid to eat.

Is that helpful Carolyn? If anyone has further comments or questions about this issue please feel free to send me your comments through this contact link or in the comments to this post. It would be good for us to make this issue clear for all.

Hominy and garbonzo beans?

I am curious if hominy garbonzo beans are the same thing. If they are, shouldn't garbonzo beans be okay to eat on the Daniel Diet? Thank you for you time, Rachael
Thanks for your question Rachael. Garbanzo beans are also known as chick peas. They are on the foods to eat list. Hominy is a grain to be avoided, because it is processed and not whole grain. For more information about hominy see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominy

Joyce's Basic Salad Dressing

Here is a recipe for a delicious salad dressing that doesn't have any sugar.

Basic Salad Dressing (2-3 servings)
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup flaxseed oil (or 2 Tbsp. each flax seed and olive oils) I used extra
  • virgin olive oil
  • 1-2 Tbsp. vinegar (apple cider, tarragon, rice, red wine, balsamic ume plum)
  • 1/2-1 Tbsp water
  • 1 tsp. Dijon-type mustard (optional, but totally delicious) Whisked into liquid for easy mixing (I used a little more...)
  • Whole or minced garlic, oregano, basil or other herbs of choice (I used a
  • combination of several.)
Mix well in a shaker jar. Store any leftovers in your refrigerator. Increase recipe for multiple servings. I hope that you enjoy this recipe as much I did!
Joyce

Thanks for sharing your recipe Joyce! One note, many people avoid vinegar, because it is made by fermentation. If you decide to avoid it vinegar, you can replace it with a juice like lemon, lime, orange, apple, etc.

What about salad dressing?

What about salad dressing?
Frank
There are many good options Frank. Be creative! Sue likes to use plain old salt. I prefer simple lemon juice. You can also add a little extra virgin olive oil or colza after the lemon juice. If you like sweet dressing, use orange juice instead of lemon juice.

You could mix up your own dressing with approved sweeteners. Molasses, raw honey, stevia, and Maple syrup are possible sweeteners. http://www.stevia.net/ has more information about stevia, a natural herb. Stevia might be cheaper at Amazon.com. They also have raw honey.

If you come up with a good dressing, send us the recipe, we'll add it to our Daniel Fast recipes page. Check out our Daniel Fast recipes and look at the book Salad Dressings: For Life By Rhonda Malkmus. Amazon has many more cookbooks.

Olive Oil on the Daniel Fast?

Hello,
Can one eat Olive Oil on the Daniel Fast?
Thanks,
Cathy

Thanks for your e-mail Cathy.

Olives are on the foods to eat list. We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or vegetable oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter. Don't use olive oil for high heat frying!

How do I start?

I have been wanting, as a fairly new Christian, to live a life of fasting and prayer, and now, I really feel like the LORD is pulling me in that direction. I am scared that I can't do it because of my relationship with food. I have often, in the past, tried fasting to "make God do something", and realized that is not the way to get God to move-FAITH IS, only to fall on my face at 3:00pm.

I have been home alone with a child (4 years old) most of his life, as my husband was in Bible College, and then deployed for a little over 2 years. My husband now gets back on 6/17/2008 and I want to get part of this done before he gets home. How do I start? My mind is boggled thinking about it. Whatever helps and hints will not be taken for granted. Thanks, Sandra
Since you are concerned about your ability to follow through with the Daniel Fast Diet, I'd advise you to do a short Daniel fast the first time. Remember, Daniel's first fast was only for ten days (Daniel 1:12). The hardest days for most people are the first 14, because of withdrawals from sugar and caffeine. So you might try doing the fast for a few days the first time, then a week the second time, then two weeks the third time, etc. That will encourage you and show that it is possible. It helps to think about all the good things you can eat and stock your pantry with them before your fast starts. Remember you can eat the allowed foods at any time. You won't be going without food! The Daniel Fast Diet is a partial fast.

White Flour and Fruit Juices

Hello....

I appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions.

I want to understand why white flour products are not allowable...ie bread,
pasta..etc...

Also, is 100% fruit juice allowable?

Can you give me an understanding about that?

Thanks so much...and be blessed
Ramona

Rev. Elmer Towns is the author of the Fasting For Spiritual Breakthrough Daniel Fast Diet. His idea here is to avoid animal products and processed foods. It is a partial fast with a lot of healthy food to eat. It is very much like a Vegan diet.

The three hardest things for most people to give up are meats, breads and favorite drinks. For me the hardest thing is coffee, because the headache is terrible from the lack of caffeine. Rev. Towns advises us to follow his fast for spiritual breakthrough and give up these few processed/party foods. We are to focus on communion with God when we desire the foods from which we are abstaining.

There are a lot of whole grain foods and breads you can enjoy. So you don't have to go without breads. Read more about whole grains.

Yes, all unsweetened juices are allowed in the foods to eat list.

Recipes for Desserts?

Hi, Do you have any recipes for desserts? My children are having a hard time giving up sweets. Thanks so much. Also a prayer request: My daughter has Osteogenesis Imperfecta. (brittle bone disease) Please pray for God's healing.
Michelle
Thanks for taking the time to write Michelle. One yummy dessert is smoothies. Some folks allow brown sugar and raw honey. Stevia is a good low calorie natural sweetener. You can buy Stevia, raw honey and raw sugar at Amazon.com.

Click here to search for Vegan dessert recipes. Avoid the recipes that call for items from the Daniel Fast Foods to avoid list.

Let's pray: Heavenly Father we are grateful that You know our bodies inside and out. We fast because we want to honor You with our bodies. We boldly trust You to heal Michelle's daughter. Make her bones strong and healthy. We give You all the glory! In Jesus Name!

Mushrooms Stuffed With Rice and Greens

Denise Austin is a long time favorite of both Sue and Mikeby Denise Austin
Makes 4 servings

Although nearly half the calories of hummus come from fat, virtually none of it is saturated. Add olive oil and walnuts and you have a delectable dose of monounsaturated fats to keep you hunger free for hours. Try to use mushrooms that are about 4 1/2" to 5" in diameter. Note: To prevent the mushrooms from becoming waterlogged, remove any sand or dirt with a brush and wipe with damp paper towels instead of rinsing with water.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 cups sliced escarole (a form of endive that is both versatile and tasty) or Swiss chard (a delicious leafy green vegetable)
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup jarred roasted red peppers, rinsed and chopped
  • 4 large portobello mushrooms, stems discarded
  • 1/2 cup prepared hummus, preferably basil-flavored
  • 3 plum tomatoes, sliced
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
To Make:
  • Cook the rice according to the package directions.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until softened. Add the escarole or Swiss chard and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until wilted. Remove from the heat and stir in the rice and peppers.
  • Place the mushrooms, gill side up, on a rimmed baking sheet. Spread with the hummus and spoon on the rice mixture, spreading it to the edges. Arrange the tomato slices on top and sprinkle with the walnuts. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Can you eat anytime of the day?

Can you eat the foods required anytime of the day or is the fasting period from 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. each day?
Kim
Hi Kim. Good to hear from you. Fasting during the Daniel Fast Diet allows you to eat any of the allowed food 24 hours a day. You or your church could decide not to eat anything from 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., but that is not required for the Daniel Fast Diet.

Blessings to you as you do the Daniel Fast Diet! Happy Daniel fasting.

Can I Drink Flavored Water?

I just came off of a 4 day Daniel Fast and I have decided to continue to fast 1 day a week. I drink a lot of flavored water, can I drink this on my 1 day fast.
Charlotte

Good to hear from you Charlotte. God bless you as you creatively practice the Daniel Fast Diet.

Read the label. If they contain artificial sweeteners, sugar or high fructose corn syrup, you should avoid them. In addition, you may decide to avoid them to make your one day fast more of a sacrifice. Then when you desire the foods that you are avoiding, like flavored water, use that as a reminder to pray about the specific reason you are fasting. We prefer to drink lots of filtered water during the Daniel Fast.

Stephanie
Good to hear from you Stephanie. Thanks for your kind words. May God bless your Daniel Fast with much spiritual fruit.

We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or Colza oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter. Don't use olive oil for frying, it cannot handle the heat.

Substitute for ice cream?

Thank you so much for your support. I have one last question....is their any substitute for ice cream? LaQuenda
You're making me hungry LaQuenda! I have to admit that my first thought to your question is when you want ice cream to go for a walk, bike ride or some other form of exercise you enjoy. On the other hand, if you want to make some non-dairy ice cream, you can probably make a delicious frozen fruit smoothie. Freeze your favorite fruits (papaya, orange, strawberries, etc.), then liquefy them in your blender.

Mint, A Healing Herb

Mint and sweet-scented plants are mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in the passages where Jesus scolded the Pharisees for gladly giving a tenth of their garden herb harvest to God while failing to honor Him in far more important matters. The Jewish people enjoyed mint with their spring Passover feasts and placed mint on the floors of their synagogues. Lamb with mint, of course, is the star attraction on many tables during the Passover and Easter holidays. Some species of mint are used to treat Alzheimer's disease and to flavor candies, gum, toothpaste, and liqueurs. They are also used as digestive aids. Peppermint oil is antiallergenic and is used in aromatherapy to stimulate brain activity.

Using Oils in a Daniel Fast Diet

I read somewhere that you could have oils, like vegetable oil, virgin olive oil, what about cannola oil? Also, Is it wrong to slice up fresh potatoes and chop fresh onions and saute them altogether in a skillet? Or would this be considered "fried foods". I asked one of my pastors and he said he felt like the reference to 'fried foods' was like things with batter that are deep fried. Please help me. Thank you. Ava

Thanks for your e-mail Ava.

Our first advice is to do the Daniel fast following the advice of your local church leaders. Many churches have specific rules for their congregations. We agree with your pastor about battered fried foods. In addition, since eggs are avoided by most of us, you can't make most batters since they include eggs.

Concerning oils, we prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza.

Are mushrooms ok on the Daniel Fast?

Hi, Are mushrooms ok on the Daniel Fast?

Thank you for this wonderful website and all
the really good information.

Anne
Thank you for your encouraging email Ann.

Yes, mushrooms are great to eat in your Daniel Fast Diet. They are listed on the Foods to eat page as vegetables. So you can fry some up with some onions in a little extra virgin olive oil and put them on your veggie burgers between your whole grain hamburger buns. You're making me hungry! Guess I better go eat my morning snack?

Fresh spinach is a nutritional powerhouse

I don't know we don't spell it spinich, that's how I say it! I can't believe I'm admitting this, but one of my favorite foods is frozen spinach. Sue and I eat it every day at lunch time. What ever we're eating, we spoon some chopped spinach on top. So follow our advice, add some spinach to your Daniel Diet! Check out this information about spinich/spinach from RealAge.com.

Fresh spinach is a nutritional powerhouse, but don't let it linger in the fridge.

The best way to use your leafy greens is during the first 4 days after purchase. After that, the antioxidant and folate levels of spinach plummet, turning it into a wimpier green.

Spinach on Ice
Even at the coldest refrigerator temperatures, researchers found that after 4 days, folate levels in a bag of fresh spinach dropped big time, and the loss escalated with each passing day. Colder temps were better for holding onto carotenoids. (Besides folate, learn what else is packed into those dark-green leaves.)

The Power of Fresh
Buying local spinach (at a farmers market or co-op store) may deliver the most nutrients to your table. Grocery-store fresh is a good second choice. Can't plan ahead? Then grab some frozen spinach. Spinach that's frozen and packaged soon after harvesting retains much of its nutritional value.

Daniel Fast Diet Menus?

My actual question was in regards to daily nutritional requirements. Would it be possible for you to outline what a day (food wise) in the life of a person on the Daniel Fast should look like? I know that if I eat just fruit and veggies all day long, my sugar levels would be sky high. So, to bring proper balance of nutrition, legumes, whole grains (making complete protiens), fruits, veggies, and seeds are critical in this type of fast. I am not sure how many servings of each in a day I should have. I personally do not have any kind of health problems that would require alterations to the fast, I just want to do it right in the eyes of my Father... Thank you so much for taking the time to consider answering my question.. Also, is fresh ground pepper acceptable? Candace
Thanks for your questions Candice. You (and other readers) are probably more of an expert in nutrition than I am! Please send us your Daniel Fast Diet menu ideas!

Yes, you need a variety of fruit, vegetables, legumes, etc. in your diet. I do that by eating about every three hours.

Examples:
  • Breakfast: oatmeal cooked with some raisins in microwave with citrus fruit, i.e. orange or grapefruit
  • Morning snack: small banana with my awesome peanut butter mix
  • Lunch: one of the great recipes at our recipe page
  • Afternoon snack: apple with almonds and/or other nuts
  • Snack-like supper: open face whole grain bread with natural peanut butter
  • Evening snack: small banana or apple with my awesome peanut butter mix
Spices, including pepper, are allowed. Avoid animal based spices like chicken or beef bullion.

Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes

I have some family that may be fixing saurkraut and mash potatoes with pork. I know not to have pork but how about saurkraut (which is cabbage) and mash potatoes (or should I have them give me a potatoe before mashed) Thank you very much. Tammy

Thanks for your questions Tammy.

Sauerkraut is a complicated issue for some of us. It is only cabbage and salt. The issue for some will be that it is fermented, like wine, beer and whiskey. So you might want to avoid sauerkraut for that reason, however the alcohol is normally cooked out of it. Personally, I don't like the taste of fermented foods, so that is my excuse for avoiding them.

Mashed potatoes have milk and butter in them, so they should be avoided. You can eat potatoes many other ways, except perhaps as potato chips. If you want French (Freedom) fries, you can spray them with a little olive oil or other healthy oil and cook them in the oven.

Olive oil and what to drink?

What to drink on a true fast and how can I use Olive oil. Olive oil was on the Dainel fast from the begining. I would like to be true to the fast. I need to know that I'm doing what God said to be a true Daniel Fast. Alva

Thanks for your e-mail Alva.

What we now do as a Daniel fast was created by Rev. Elmer Towns, in his book Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough. He followed the principles of Daniel's partial fast in Daniel chapter 1.

The Hebrew word translated in English as vegetables, means food planted for harvest. Olives are a fruit that is planted for harvest.

We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or olive oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter.

You can drink unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices, because they are made from fruit and vegetables that are planted for harvest. We avoid all processed foods, like white rice, white flour, white sugar, and artificial sweeteners. Water is the best thing you can drink.

Salt, spices, fructose, organic tea, oats, questions

Thanks for your questions Amanda.

>What kind of salty spices are we allowed to use. I saw you mentioned salt - any kind of salt?

No problem with any salt or spices. Avoid sugar and animal product based products. It is advised to avoid artificial sweeteners. Butter is an animal product and should be avoided. We encourage people to replace butter with high quality extra virgin olive oil.

Molasses, raw sugar, raw honey, Stevia, and Maple syrup are possible sweeteners. http://www.stevia.net/ has more information about Stevia, a natural herb. Stevia might be cheaper at Amazon.com - http://tinyurl.com/2sc847 They also have raw honey - http://tinyurl.com/2pyras

>Is fruit suger (fructose) allowed?

Raw sweeteners are OK, processed glucose, fructose etc are not allowed.

>I am drinking organic teas - will that be okay?

Organic is not required. Many teas are very good for you. You should avoid teas with caffeine.

>How do we eat your oats?

I eat my oats raw, mixed into my natural peanut butter and eat on cold bananas or whole grain bread. Sue adds water and a few raisins to her oatmeal and microwaves it.

Whole Grains in the Daniel Diet

Have I misunderstood your recommendation that it is OK to eat 3 cups of uncooked then cooked) oatmeal per day in the beginning of the Daniel Diet?
Thank you!
Cherry

Hi Cherry,
I'm not sure where you read about 3 cups of oatmeal. Oatmeal is allowed in the Daniel Diet, along with all other whole grains. You can eat as much of whole grain products raw or cooked as you desire.

Whole grain products are allowed and can be identified by the ingredient list. Typically if the ingredient lists "whole wheat", "rolled oats", or "whole corn" as the first ingredient, the product is a whole grain food item. Another way to identify whole grains in the foods you eat is to look in the nutritional facts information and check if the food item contains dietary fiber. If it contains a significant amount, it most likely contains whole grains. "Wheat flour" is not a whole grain and therefore does not indicate a whole grain product. Many breads are colored brown (often with molasses) and made to look like whole grain, but are not. Additionally, some food manufacturers make foods with whole grain ingredients, but because whole grain ingredients are not the dominant ingredient, they are not whole grain products.

Whole grains are often more expensive than refined grains, because their higher oil content is susceptible to rancidification, complicating processing, storage, and transport.

From AACC (American Association of Cereal Chemist) definition: "Whole grains shall consist of the intact, ground, cracked or flaked caryopsis, whose principal anatomical components - the starchy endosperm, germ and bran - are present in the same relative proportions as they exist in the intact caryopsis. Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_grains

We are sure our foods are made with whole grain, because we grind our grain ourselves.

You can make your own pasta or noodles out of whole grains with a pasta machine.

Thanks,
Mike

Blessed in more ways than one

Thank you for responding to my question. I am practically a vegan due to a major change in my health.

I have acid reflux (6 years) and after trying every medication on the market known to man I decided to go all natural. I am blessed in more ways than one, I am a 20 year breast cancer survivor, and I do not take my blessings for granted. When I changed my diet, due to the reflux, my body felt very healthy and clean. The additives, fats and anything with a face have to be eradicated from my life.

I grow my own veggies and buy organic or farmers grown fruit and veggies. The water, fresh fruit juices (I juice myself) and fruit and soy smoothies are the only liquids I have.

Yes, I must admit that the Daniel fast has made me aware of some of the ingredients in some of the so called healthy foods I digest every day.

However, to make a long story short I would love to join your prayer club. Some of the time I get so caught up in my everyday life that I forget to stop and pray.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

P.S. Don't worry about me jumping back in to my old style because I can't eat the way I used to. Hey, I don't miss it anymore like I use to. I forgot to mention that my faithful husband of 21 years is also on the fast with me.

Sincerely,
Amanda and Jeff

The Daniel's Fast Cookbook

The Daniel's Fast Cookbook
"Hallelujah!! The First Daniel Fast Cookbook
We've been searching for this cookbook since 2003. What encourages us most about Grace and Lynda's Daniel's Fast Cookbook is that it is endorsed by Elmer L. Towns, who created the Daniel Fast for Spiritual Breakthrough in his book Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough."

"I believe in Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough, this is a discipline that God has given to the church for renewal, revival, and worship of the Lord. I am so glad that Grace Bass and Lynda Anderson have written this cookbook on The Daniel Fast. I pray that God will use it in the lives of many people." Elmer L. Towns Co-Founder, Liberty University, Dean, School of Religion, Lynchburg, Virginia

Their cookbook contains more than 100 healthy, tasty and easy to prepare Daniel's Diet recipes. It also includes helpful nutritional information, practical advice for fasting as a church, list of restaurants that have foods we can enjoy on their menu, list of recommended stores we can trust and products we can enjoy. Grace and Lynda also included a section about food options depending on our own personal spiritual convictions. This is an excellent cookbook for Christians considering a Vegan Diet. Thank you Grace and Lynda!

Amazon.com says it will be available in 4-7 weeks. It would be a good idea to pre-order. There will be a huge demand for this cookbook.

Avoid sex, coffee and tea?

I am starting the Daniel Fast today and I am wondering, can I drink Coffee and tea as long as it is decafe and without sugar or cream? Should sexual activity be avoided during a fast? I think it says something to that nature in the bible. I'm not sure if it says it should be agreed on or to just not do it. Andrew

Dear Andrew,
Yes, decaf coffee and teas without caffeine are OK.

Sexual abstinence is not a requirement of Daniel's Fast diet. If you and your spouse both agree that it would be good for you, then you can abstain from sex during your fast.
