What if I break my fast?

What if I break my fast on day 9 and resume on day 10? Is that okay?
God understands your situation. Do your best! If you break your fast for a special event or you just "blow it," restart again after the meal that caused you to break the fast. Eastern Orthodox Christians have been doing the Daniel fast for Lent for centuries. They believe that it dishonors Christ to fast on Sunday, when we weekly celebrate his Resurrection. So they break their 40 day Lenten Daniel Fast every Sunday.

Daniel Diet as a lifestyle

Hello,

I am a vegetarian and believe that the Lord has told me that the Daniel diet is supposed to be a permanent lifestyle for me.

Do you know of anyone else who maintains the Daniel diet 24/7?

I am struggling a bit with the fact that on this diet (which is basically a vegatarian diet with a few more restrictions) I can't drink wine on ocassion e.g out to dinner with my husband nor have a normal desert- ever...

Do you know of anyone else who permanently does the Daniel diet and how strictly they adhere to it- I know that this is an issue to talk to the Lord about but would like to know what others have been instructed as well.

Most of my questions were answered on your Questions & Answers page.

Thank you for all of this information on your site- very helpful!

God Bless,
Tulani
Yes, there are people doing the Daniel Fast as a lifestyle. Our privacy policy is that we don't share any email addresses from our readers with any others. This post could be a good place to check back and read comments from other readers, who desire to do the Daniel Fast/Diet long term.

As we've researched the Daniel Fast Diet, Vegan Diet, and related nutritional issues, we've found some issues that you should be aware of; the Vegan Diet is low in Omega 3, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron. So it might be wise to take supplements that include Omega 3, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron. Short term, these deficiencies aren't much of a problem. Long term, they could be serious. Please research the Vegan Diet further for yourself.

Is Daniel's Fast only vegetables?

If you are on a diet or use the Food Guide Pyramid, legumes, nuts, and seeds are considered proteins and placed under the meat category. Why are they allowed on this Fast when meat is not allowed?

Why are whole grains allowed? Why are fruits allowed? I thought the Bible says Daniel ate only vegetables and drank water.

Carolyn
Thank you for your very important question Carolyn. I've avoided giving a long answer to this question for a number of years. I normally just give the short answer that the original language makes it clear that we can eat these foods. Today, I feel led to give you the long answer. As a seminary graduate and a pastor for more than 30 years, I will share my understanding of this issue.

Our problem is that we are tempted to interpret Scriptures according to our own culture and the English text in our particular version of the Bible. However, we need to interpret Scripture by the power of the Holy Spirit, according to the author, audience, context, and original language: Greek or Hebrew. In other words, we need to study the Scriptures to find the meaning of the text for the original author and audience in their language and historical setting.

The Daniel Fast is a non-animal product and non-alcohol diet. Scriptures are from the KJV. The Biblical context helps us to understand what Daniel refused to eat.
Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Therefore, we know that Daniel refused to eat meat and drink wine.
Dan 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
The Bible says that Daniel ate only pulse, which is translated vegetables by some translators.

Let's take a look at Daniel's original words:
Strong's concordance tells us that the Hebrew word is
H2235
זרען זרע
zêrôa‛ zêrâ‛ôn
zay-ro'-ah, zay-raw-ohn'
From H2232; something sown (only in the plural), that is, a vegetable (as food): - pulse.

H2232
זרע
zâra‛
zaw-rah'
A primitive root; to sow; figuratively to disseminate, plant, fructify: - bear, conceive seed, set with, sow (-er), yield.
When we are careful to study these words, we find that Daniel's original Fast allowed all non-animal, non-fermented foods that are planted for harvest. He did this because he did not want to defile himself by disobeying God by eating non-kosher foods or meats that may have been offered to the king's idols.

Now that we've studied the Scriptures and understand better the context of Daniel's Fast Diet, we can move to the final step in a practical Bible study, the application of the lesson to our lives. Most Scriptures have one main meaning or interpretation. We have the freedom to apply the lessons we learn in many ways.

You may decide that your application of this study is that you will drink only bottled spring water and eat only food classified by English speaking Americans as falling into the category of vegetables for a period of 10 days. And I would say that is wonderful and God will bless you with spiritual breakthrough. I would caution you not to continue that diet for an extended amount of time as it could be very dangerous to your health.

Another person may decide that for them their Daniel fast diet will include all the foods we list at our foods to eat page, but that they feel led to apply the fast to their lives and personal nutritional needs by adding fish and poultry products.

Our opinion is that the best solution, especially if you are doing a Daniel Fast Diet as a group, is to follow the advice that we and most other Daniel Fast books and websites give you. Eat the foods we list as allowed to eat and avoid the foods we list to avoid to eat.

Is that helpful Carolyn? If anyone has further comments or questions about this issue please feel free to send me your comments through this contact link or in the comments to this post. It would be good for us to make this issue clear for all.

Hominy and garbonzo beans?

I am curious if hominy garbonzo beans are the same thing. If they are, shouldn't garbonzo beans be okay to eat on the Daniel Diet? Thank you for you time, Rachael
Thanks for your question Rachael. Garbanzo beans are also known as chick peas. They are on the foods to eat list. Hominy is a grain to be avoided, because it is processed and not whole grain. For more information about hominy see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominy

Wheat Bread and Daniel Fast Duration

Hi it is me again. Is it alright to eat wheat Bread and if so does it have to be gluten free?and is the fast as long as I want or is it only requried for 10 days. Valencia
Wheat bread:
Whole grain bread is good. Whole grain products are allowed and can be identified by the ingredient list. Typically if the ingredient lists "whole wheat", "rolled oats", or "whole corn" as the first ingredient, the product is a whole grain food item.

Duration:
You can do the Daniel Fast for 3 days, 10 days, 21 days, or 40 days. Many do the Daniel Diet for a lifetime. Even Non-Christians have found Daniel's Vegan diet to be a source of healing for a long duration. Read more about duration of a Daniel Diet.

What about salad dressing?

What about salad dressing?
Frank
There are many good options Frank. Be creative! Sue likes to use plain old salt. I prefer simple lemon juice. You can also add a little extra virgin olive oil or colza after the lemon juice. If you like sweet dressing, use orange juice instead of lemon juice.

You could mix up your own dressing with approved sweeteners. Molasses, raw honey, stevia, and Maple syrup are possible sweeteners. http://www.stevia.net/ has more information about stevia, a natural herb. Stevia might be cheaper at Amazon.com. They also have raw honey.

If you come up with a good dressing, send us the recipe, we'll add it to our Daniel Fast recipes page. Check out our Daniel Fast recipes and look at the book Salad Dressings: For Life By Rhonda Malkmus. Amazon has many more cookbooks.

Olive Oil on the Daniel Fast?

Hello,
Can one eat Olive Oil on the Daniel Fast?
Thanks,
Cathy

Thanks for your e-mail Cathy.

Olives are on the foods to eat list. We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or vegetable oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter. Don't use olive oil for high heat frying!

Mix the vegetables?

With the Daniel's Fast; the dried beans do you eat them raw or do you cook them and once you cook them do you eat them only or can I mix the vegetables together? And will they be more beneficent if I eat them one vegetable at a time or if I mix them? Carlos
Thanks for your question Carlos. You can cook, mix and eat the allowed foods any way you like. If you fry foods, like in a wok or pan, just use as little oil as possible. Try to us healthy oils, no animal fat. Don't deep fry foods!

How do I start?

I have been wanting, as a fairly new Christian, to live a life of fasting and prayer, and now, I really feel like the LORD is pulling me in that direction. I am scared that I can't do it because of my relationship with food. I have often, in the past, tried fasting to "make God do something", and realized that is not the way to get God to move-FAITH IS, only to fall on my face at 3:00pm.

I have been home alone with a child (4 years old) most of his life, as my husband was in Bible College, and then deployed for a little over 2 years. My husband now gets back on 6/17/2008 and I want to get part of this done before he gets home. How do I start? My mind is boggled thinking about it. Whatever helps and hints will not be taken for granted. Thanks, Sandra
Since you are concerned about your ability to follow through with the Daniel Fast Diet, I'd advise you to do a short Daniel fast the first time. Remember, Daniel's first fast was only for ten days (Daniel 1:12). The hardest days for most people are the first 14, because of withdrawals from sugar and caffeine. So you might try doing the fast for a few days the first time, then a week the second time, then two weeks the third time, etc. That will encourage you and show that it is possible. It helps to think about all the good things you can eat and stock your pantry with them before your fast starts. Remember you can eat the allowed foods at any time. You won't be going without food! The Daniel Fast Diet is a partial fast.

Clear Excellence Sparkling flavored water

I drink only Clear Excellence Sparkling flavored water. Naturally Flavored with other natural flavors. No Sodium, No Caffeine. Would this be considered a carbonated drink?
Gloria
Wow, that sounds like a yummy drink! I just did a search on that product. I see that it is "lightly carbonated." So it is a carbonated drink. You can make your own flavored water using natural flavors like mint, lemon, orange, cinnamon, Stevia, etc. Just leave out the carbonic acid! Maybe after your Daniel Fast Diet, you'll decide you don't need to buy that product any more. Even if you do buy it again, you'll appreciate it a lot more.

How to prepare mentally, physically, spiritually

How do I begin to prepare myself mentally and physically before I begin the Daniel Diet?
Thank You,
Hazel

It would be good to begin your mental and spiritual preparation by studying fasting in the Scripture. Elmer Towns' book, Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough, is a great place to start.

Your physical preparation will make your fast go a lot easier. Most of us don't know how our diet affects us in so many ways. The most common "negative side-effect" of the Daniel Fast Diet is the withdrawals we experience from caffeine. The headaches are terrible. You will also experience fatigue. Cutting processed sugar from your diet could cause some negative side-effects. If you start weaning yourself from sugar and caffeine from coffee and tea ahead of time, you'll experience less of the negative side effects.

White Flour and Fruit Juices

Hello....

I appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions.

I want to understand why white flour products are not allowable...ie bread,
pasta..etc...

Also, is 100% fruit juice allowable?

Can you give me an understanding about that?

Thanks so much...and be blessed
Ramona

Rev. Elmer Towns is the author of the Fasting For Spiritual Breakthrough Daniel Fast Diet. His idea here is to avoid animal products and processed foods. It is a partial fast with a lot of healthy food to eat. It is very much like a Vegan diet.

The three hardest things for most people to give up are meats, breads and favorite drinks. For me the hardest thing is coffee, because the headache is terrible from the lack of caffeine. Rev. Towns advises us to follow his fast for spiritual breakthrough and give up these few processed/party foods. We are to focus on communion with God when we desire the foods from which we are abstaining.

There are a lot of whole grain foods and breads you can enjoy. So you don't have to go without breads. Read more about whole grains.

Yes, all unsweetened juices are allowed in the foods to eat list.

Salt, Tuna, Mayo?

can i have products with salt in them ( like tuna in a can has salt and all natural butter it has salt in it.. real mayo, peanut butter, 100% wheat bread. mrs. dash products
Shedra
Mayonnaise and butter are animal fat items to be avoided.

No problem with salt or spices. Avoid sugar and animal product based spices. It is advised to avoid artificial sweetener. However, butter is a high fat item and should be avoided. We encourage people to replace butter with high quality extra virgin olive oil.

Molasses, raw sugar, raw honey, Stevia, and Maple syrup are possible sweeteners. http://www.stevia.net/ has more information about Stevia, a natural herb. Stevia might be cheaper at Amazon.com - http://tinyurl.com/2sc847 They also have raw honey - http://tinyurl.com/2pyras

Fish and poultry

Q. I would like to know if fish is acceptable for the daneil fast; that is baked, boiled, grilled or steamed?

A. It's best to avoid all meats. However, if God is telling you to eat fish during one of your Daniel Fasts, then obey God and call it a modified Daniel Fast!

Q. What about fish or poultry, i.e. tuna, chicken, turkey, etc.?

A. Meat is normally avoided. Pray first and ask the Lord if you should allow fish and poultry products. Definitely avoid fried foods.

Why Avoid Fried Foods?

I am just curious as to why you can't have fried foods... especially if you fry them in olive oil or vegetable oil.
Dianna
Hi Dianna, thanks for your question. You can eat some fried foods. Elmer Towns is the author of the Fasting For Spiritual Breakthrough Daniel Fast Diet. He clearly states that we should avoid "margarine, shortening, animal fat, high fat products." So we are allowed to fry foods with a little oil, but we should avoid deep fat frying, which is definitely too much oil.

We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or Colza oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter. Don't use olive oil for frying, it cannot handle the heat.

Recipes for Desserts?

Hi, Do you have any recipes for desserts? My children are having a hard time giving up sweets. Thanks so much. Also a prayer request: My daughter has Osteogenesis Imperfecta. (brittle bone disease) Please pray for God's healing.
Michelle
Thanks for taking the time to write Michelle. One yummy dessert is smoothies. Some folks allow brown sugar and raw honey. Stevia is a good low calorie natural sweetener. You can buy Stevia, raw honey and raw sugar at Amazon.com.

Click here to search for Vegan dessert recipes. Avoid the recipes that call for items from the Daniel Fast Foods to avoid list.

Let's pray: Heavenly Father we are grateful that You know our bodies inside and out. We fast because we want to honor You with our bodies. We boldly trust You to heal Michelle's daughter. Make her bones strong and healthy. We give You all the glory! In Jesus Name!

Pain in My Tongue

Dear fellow christian, thank you for this opportunity to ask questions.

My Question: I know about the Dianel fast. I did engage in some day of Daniel fast and some days into the fast I started experiencing some pain on the inner part of my tongue. It makes it reasonably painful for me to swallow saliver, any explain why? please reply.

Stay blessed in Jesus name Amen
Jim
We're sorry to hear about your pain Jim. That is not a common side effect of detoxifying your body, but it is possible. You should consult with your health professionals. Let them know you are doing a Vegan Diet with no sugar or caffeine. Those are the two that cause the most side effects, including body pain and headache. Let us know what you find out, so we can share it with our other Daniel's Fast friends.

Can I Drink Flavored Water?

I just came off of a 4 day Daniel Fast and I have decided to continue to fast 1 day a week. I drink a lot of flavored water, can I drink this on my 1 day fast.
Charlotte

Good to hear from you Charlotte. God bless you as you creatively practice the Daniel Fast Diet.

Read the label. If they contain artificial sweeteners, sugar or high fructose corn syrup, you should avoid them. In addition, you may decide to avoid them to make your one day fast more of a sacrifice. Then when you desire the foods that you are avoiding, like flavored water, use that as a reminder to pray about the specific reason you are fasting. We prefer to drink lots of filtered water during the Daniel Fast.

Substitute for ice cream?

Thank you so much for your support. I have one last question....is their any substitute for ice cream? LaQuenda
You're making me hungry LaQuenda! I have to admit that my first thought to your question is when you want ice cream to go for a walk, bike ride or some other form of exercise you enjoy. On the other hand, if you want to make some non-dairy ice cream, you can probably make a delicious frozen fruit smoothie. Freeze your favorite fruits (papaya, orange, strawberries, etc.), then liquefy them in your blender.

Using Oils in a Daniel Fast Diet

I read somewhere that you could have oils, like vegetable oil, virgin olive oil, what about cannola oil? Also, Is it wrong to slice up fresh potatoes and chop fresh onions and saute them altogether in a skillet? Or would this be considered "fried foods". I asked one of my pastors and he said he felt like the reference to 'fried foods' was like things with batter that are deep fried. Please help me. Thank you. Ava

Thanks for your e-mail Ava.

Our first advice is to do the Daniel fast following the advice of your local church leaders. Many churches have specific rules for their congregations. We agree with your pastor about battered fried foods. In addition, since eggs are avoided by most of us, you can't make most batters since they include eggs.

Concerning oils, we prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza.

Are mushrooms ok on the Daniel Fast?

Hi, Are mushrooms ok on the Daniel Fast?

Thank you for this wonderful website and all
the really good information.

Anne
Thank you for your encouraging email Ann.

Yes, mushrooms are great to eat in your Daniel Fast Diet. They are listed on the Foods to eat page as vegetables. So you can fry some up with some onions in a little extra virgin olive oil and put them on your veggie burgers between your whole grain hamburger buns. You're making me hungry! Guess I better go eat my morning snack?

Daniel Fast Diet Menus?

My actual question was in regards to daily nutritional requirements. Would it be possible for you to outline what a day (food wise) in the life of a person on the Daniel Fast should look like? I know that if I eat just fruit and veggies all day long, my sugar levels would be sky high. So, to bring proper balance of nutrition, legumes, whole grains (making complete protiens), fruits, veggies, and seeds are critical in this type of fast. I am not sure how many servings of each in a day I should have. I personally do not have any kind of health problems that would require alterations to the fast, I just want to do it right in the eyes of my Father... Thank you so much for taking the time to consider answering my question.. Also, is fresh ground pepper acceptable? Candace
Thanks for your questions Candice. You (and other readers) are probably more of an expert in nutrition than I am! Please send us your Daniel Fast Diet menu ideas!

Yes, you need a variety of fruit, vegetables, legumes, etc. in your diet. I do that by eating about every three hours.

Examples:
  • Breakfast: oatmeal cooked with some raisins in microwave with citrus fruit, i.e. orange or grapefruit
  • Morning snack: small banana with my awesome peanut butter mix
  • Lunch: one of the great recipes at our recipe page
  • Afternoon snack: apple with almonds and/or other nuts
  • Snack-like supper: open face whole grain bread with natural peanut butter
  • Evening snack: small banana or apple with my awesome peanut butter mix
Spices, including pepper, are allowed. Avoid animal based spices like chicken or beef bullion.

Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes

I have some family that may be fixing saurkraut and mash potatoes with pork. I know not to have pork but how about saurkraut (which is cabbage) and mash potatoes (or should I have them give me a potatoe before mashed) Thank you very much. Tammy

Thanks for your questions Tammy.

Sauerkraut is a complicated issue for some of us. It is only cabbage and salt. The issue for some will be that it is fermented, like wine, beer and whiskey. So you might want to avoid sauerkraut for that reason, however the alcohol is normally cooked out of it. Personally, I don't like the taste of fermented foods, so that is my excuse for avoiding them.

Mashed potatoes have milk and butter in them, so they should be avoided. You can eat potatoes many other ways, except perhaps as potato chips. If you want French (Freedom) fries, you can spray them with a little olive oil or other healthy oil and cook them in the oven.

Olive oil and what to drink?

What to drink on a true fast and how can I use Olive oil. Olive oil was on the Dainel fast from the begining. I would like to be true to the fast. I need to know that I'm doing what God said to be a true Daniel Fast. Alva

Thanks for your e-mail Alva.

What we now do as a Daniel fast was created by Rev. Elmer Towns, in his book Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough. He followed the principles of Daniel's partial fast in Daniel chapter 1.

The Hebrew word translated in English as vegetables, means food planted for harvest. Olives are a fruit that is planted for harvest.

We prefer extra virgin olive oil and Colza. Canola and other healthy non-animal fats are OK in moderation. Use as little oil as possible. French fries have too much oil. Spray some Pam or olive oil on your fries and bake them. We use olive oil in the place of butter. Add a little salt if you like salted butter.

You can drink unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices, because they are made from fruit and vegetables that are planted for harvest. We avoid all processed foods, like white rice, white flour, white sugar, and artificial sweeteners. Water is the best thing you can drink.

Salt, spices, fructose, organic tea, oats, questions

Thanks for your questions Amanda.

>What kind of salty spices are we allowed to use. I saw you mentioned salt - any kind of salt?

No problem with any salt or spices. Avoid sugar and animal product based products. It is advised to avoid artificial sweeteners. Butter is an animal product and should be avoided.

>Is fruit suger (fructose) allowed?

Raw sweeteners are OK, processed glucose, fructose etc are not allowed.

>I am drinking organic teas - will that be okay?

Organic is not required. Many teas are very good for you. You should avoid teas with caffeine.

>How do we eat your oats?

I eat my oats raw, mixed into my natural peanut butter and eat on cold bananas or whole grain bread. Sue adds water and a few raisins to her oatmeal and microwaves it.

What is the Daniel Fast?

Many ask, What is the "Daniel Fast"? A Daniel Fast or Daniel Diet is a modern application of Daniel's Fast in Daniel chapter 1. When you do Daniel's Diet or Fast, you are avoiding meats and unhealthy foods and eating healthy Vegan foods. Some refer to Daniels Fast as a health food diet. This version of Daniel's fast was created by Elmer Towns in his book Fasting for Spiritual breakthrough.

Duration of Effective Daniel Fast Diet?

Please help me pray to get the job that I have applied for as a Chief Executive officer. I truly believe that this is the job that God has set aside for me for I can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengthens me Phil:4:13

I greet you all in the wonderful name of Jesus. I fasted last week for 5 days where I deprived myself food from morning and broke my fasts at 6pm in the evening. I am now interested in the Daniel fast but was wondering how long I would have to do it for it to be effective. How can I strengthen my fast for me to strengthen my relationship with God and for me to get the results that I am looking for?

God Bless you

Dear Friend,
Some people do the Daniel Fast for 10, 21, or 40 days and others for a lifetime. It will be effective, whether you see the results you desire or not. God is faithful! Even if we don't like His response to our prayer and fasting, it is the best thing for us. Trust in Christ alone for salvation and try your first Daniel Fast! You'll be glad you did.

Sincerely,
Mike

Read the Bible and Pray

My question is, while on the Daniel Fast, how often do you have to read the Bible and pray? We have our chores we do during the day. Thank you for this information. Buck

Dear Buck,
Try to set a regular time to read the Word, whether it be ten minutes or an hour. I listen to an Audio Bible on my mp3 player while I exercise in the morning.

My goal for prayer, whether doing the Daniel Fast Diet or not, is to pray without ceasing. That has many manifestations. Some times it is doing my chores to the best of my ability to the glory of God. Other times it means praying with my eyes open for people and things I see as I go through the day. Sue and I use the ACTS prayer method every night before bed. Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. Pray for 3-10 minutes each category. Mike

Chewing gum while fasting?

I know this may sound like a really crazy question, but what is your opinion of chewing gum while you are fasting? I don't want to break my fast over something so silly but it does help. Rebekah

Dear Rebekah
Interesting question Rebekah! That is definitely the first time we've had it. Well the problem is that gum either has sugar or artificial sweeteners. Both are not allowed in the Daniel Fast. Maybe you can find some gum made with approved sweeteners.

On the other hand, I'd like to say that the tiny amount of artificial sweetener in sugarless chewing gum should not be a problem. If it was, then you'd have to stop using toothpaste as well. We don't want to become Pharisees, splitting hairs over little items.

If you do blow it and eat something you shouldn't have, just get right back to the fast. Don't let it cause you to feel that you broke your fast and have to stop. Mike

Stuff your face with cheeseburgers

What do you do when you have embarked on a 21 day fast to deal with sin in your life and after 7 days of doing awesome....you blow it! Fall into a sin and then feel guilty about it and then just throw your hands up and stuff your face with cheeseburgers and then wake up the next morning shaking your head. Do u keep on tryin to fast or is it pretty much over??? Christopher

Dear Christopher,
You're not the first person to blow it and you won't be the last. Spiritual maturity can be measured in many ways. The way I like the most is how quick you get back on your feet after you fall down. When a baby falls down, he finds something else to do on the ground. When an adult falls down, she gets back up real fast and brushes the dirt (sin) off her clothes! Our advice: continue your fast and see great spiritual breakthrough! Mike

This Daniel Fast site is very educational

This site has been very educational. I thank you. This is the first time I am fasting. I have been learning how to eat over the past six months and I am getting much better, so I am ready to commit to sacrafice to the Lord. I am taking it to him in prayer on how far to go, a full fast or partial fast. I have had a few medical things, but I trust in his healing and will continue too. Regardless of the answer, I thank you for all the great information here. I had a lot of questions and all of them were answered already from previous questions. Again Thanks. Tara

OK to continue more than 21 days?

I began the Daniel Fast on Jan 2. I'm at my 30 day mark. Is it ok to continue more than the 21 days you speak about? Are there any physical difficulties with continuing past 21 days, or even spiritual difficulties? Darla

Dear Darla,
My wife and I like to do the Daniel Fast Diet for the 40 days of Lent. We work among Catholics and Muslims, so it is important that we identify with them through the Lenten Fast.

As we've researched the Daniel Fast Diet (Vegan Diet) and related nutritional issues, we've found some issues that you should be aware of; the Vegan Diet is low in Omega 3, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron. So it might be wise to take supplements that include Omega 3, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron. Short term these deficiencies aren't much of a problem. Long term, they could be serious. Please research the Vegan Diet further for yourself. Mike

Avoid sex, coffee and tea?

I am starting the Daniel Fast today and I am wondering, can I drink Coffee and tea as long as it is decafe and without sugar or cream? Should sexual activity be avoided during a fast? I think it says something to that nature in the bible. I'm not sure if it says it should be agreed on or to just not do it. Andrew

Dear Andrew,
Yes, decaf coffee and teas without caffeine are OK.

Sexual abstinence is not a requirement of Daniel's Fast diet. If you and your spouse both agree that it would be good for you, then you can abstain from sex during your fast.

what a new anointing means in practical terms

I am on day 26 of a 40 day Daniel fast. on day 21 I was prayed for and give a word that God was giving me a new anointing and the direction from the Lord was to write it down. I have asked for a spiritual breakthrough and an emotional healing. Generally will God continue to move past the days of the fast? I am still struggling with my emotional breakthrough but this word seems to be an answer to spiritual breakthrough. Any insight as I go on fasting would be helpful. Not really sure what a new anointing means in practical terms. Thank you, Chris

What about protein drinks?

I am not sure if I asked this question already, so forgive me. I am 14 days into my Daniel fast and doing great! Feeling great! I am concerned about not getting enough protein as I am exercising daily now at a pretty moderate pace. What about protein drinks? I picked up one from Sam's and it is Naturade Soy Protein Weight Loss Meal Replacement. It only has 13g of protein per serving, 150 calories , not bad in that respect, but does have some addititves that I have no idea if they are natural or chemical. Any suggestions? I have not felt led to add chicken or fish at this time, but if that would be better than a protein drink, I will. thanks for your help! God is so good! I am hearing so much more clearly and my prayer time is awesome! Wendy

Healthy diet but definitely not a fast

I'm having a hard time of understanding why Daniel ch. 1 is used as a basis for a fast. Daniel did not abstain from food. He ate vegatables and fruit. (pulse) Don't get me wrong I'm a believer in fasting because the Bible is very clear about it. I guess my missionary friend fast everyday because beans and banana's are basically the main food group in the remote regions of Nicaragua. No doubt this would be a great healthy diet but definately not a fast. Any insights would be appreciated. Great site!! Billy

Good question Billy. I asked the same question many years ago when I began fasting with a three day apple fast.

Webster's Dictionary says the following about "fasting":

Main Entry: fast
Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English fæstan
Date: before 12th century
1 : to abstain from food
2 : to eat sparingly or abstain from some foods

So in the sense of the Daniel Fast Diet we are abstaining from some foods. I like to use the term "Daniel's Fast Diet" at our website.

Daniel Fast Diet Comments December 2007

Fri, 28 Dec 2007

What would you think of my fast becoming a way of eating for me. I have multiple physical problems. I've been told that what is in the Daniel Fast is the way I should be eating for life. Cathy

I am wanting to start fasting today. However, I have two major issues in my life that I need to deal with and the Daniel and St. Paul's fast speak to those issues. Priscilla

I'm going to be doing the Daniel Fast for 21 days in the beginning of the new year. Yvette

Hello-I was researching the Daniel Fast and was directed to your site. What a beautiful family. I hope your family had a wonderful Christmas. God Bless. Tamara

I could go into great detail as to "HOW" I ended up at your site, but to say it simply GOD SENT ME HERE. I don't know why, but that's all up to God. My family will be doing the Daniel Fast in January along with our church. Kristi

I have been body building for 4 years. I am 49 years old. I consume 40-50 grams of protien every 3 hours and supplement with energy drinks high in caffiene. My pastor has called for a 21 day Daniel fast. I am concerned about loosing alot of the body mass I have gained. He said the fast is strickly vegetables and water. I need the spiritual breakthrough that the fasting and prayer will yield but don't know if I am willing to give up the hard gains I have made. Al

our church has called for a 40 day fast. this will be my first time doing this so i printed out the food that i can have but, some of the recipes call for salt, can i have that? jennifer

My friend and I are joining a corporate 21 day fast and we have chosen to the Daniel fast. We are both addicted to cigarettes which is one of the reason we are fasting. We are being realistic that we will probably smoke during the fast. I believe God honors all sacrafices but do you think we will still be rewarded with the spiritual and supernatural blessing of a fast or will the smoking block blessing due to the sinful nature of it? Michelle

How would you respond to the modern ethical aspects of: packaging, transportation and carbon footprint compontents of a "Daniels Diet"? You may wish to add a paragraph or two on these very significant and timely considerations.

Thank-you and bless you, Your site has eased my lament with a practical solution, biblical insight and personal empowerment without a marketing gimmic. -david

Thank you for the great guidelines and helpful answers to questions. I was wondering if dried fruit (without preservatives or added sweeteners) are acceptable on the Daniel Fast. They're great mixed with nuts for on the go snacks but I'm worried that the natural sugars they contain might be excessive as they become concentrated in the drying process. Thanks, Viki
