Your Workout Range

What is your perfect workout range? It's where you burn the most fat and calories. Its where you build the most lean muscle mass. Some think it's when they feel like they couldn't possibly work out any harder. They are wrong! When we work out to a point that is painful or uncomfortable, we do damage to our bodies. We end up burning muscle instead of fat.

So what should we do? The American Academy of Sports Medicine suggests this formula to find our best exercise pace:

  • Estimate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220.
  • Multiply your maximum heart rate by 0.6 to get your lower limit.
  • Multiply your maximum heart rate by 0.9 to get your upper limit.

Now you have your ideal heart rate range. Try to work out at the lower limit of your range for longer periods. Don't worry about taking it too easy. We build more muscle (and burn more fat) by keeping our intensity in check. That's your perfect workout!
