The Good News

How can you know if you are a Christian?

By Rick Edwards

Mark 1:14-15 Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

The Good News of Jesus Christ is the message of His life and ministry, by which God acquired for us eternal salvation. To put it more plainly, God the Father sent His Son to secure our forgiveness and deliverance from sin and from hell that we might know Him and be reconciled to Him forever.

Jesus accomplished this through His God-ordained sufferings and sacrificial death for us sinners, and proved the success of His mission and His eternal Lordship by the resurrection from the dead. Unfortunately, the heart of this message is often obscured today by a faulty emphasis or the addition of teachings or practices never sanctioned by God or Scripture. So, it is possible to hear the name of Christ, be introduced to certain passages of the Bible, receive instruction in something called "the way of salvation"- and still be misled! How sobering it is to consider that an earnest faith in the wrong source is worthless ...actually, worse than worthless, because the misled "believer" has a confidence wrongly placed.

The only sure authority of these matters is Scripture; please investigate the following passages for yourself in their context, especially those noted more completely in the second part. The following is a small attempt to clarify the simplicity of the Gospel, which has but a few essential components.
