What is Ashura?
Tue, 30 Jan 2007
Today is the Day of Ashura for Shi'a Muslims. Ashura is the 10th day of the month of Muharram. This is the day on which Muhammad's grandson, Husayn ibn Ali, was killed in the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in 680 AD. For Shi'a Muslims this is a day of mourning. Many Lebanese Muslims closed their stores today in Abidjan. Thousands of Lebanese gathered at a stadium to watch a live satellite broadcast of the memorial service in Lebanon. Sunni Muslims believe that Moses fasted on this day to express gratitude to God for the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt.
Heavenly Father, we pray that You would use this memorial day to draw many Muslims to put their faith in Christ Jesus for salvation. Give Mike and Sue love and wisdom as they share the hope they have in Jesus.
Turmoil in Guinea, Lebanon, and Cote d'Ivoire
Tue, 23 Jan 2007
Guinea, West Africa is a mess. So far more than 20 civilians were killed by police and military. Over a hundred are severely wounded. Lebanon seems to be heading into civil war again. There were huge marches today. Even some men beating each other with 2x4s in the streets. Here in Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan was partially closed down by marches today in the downtown section. Tomorrow, a strike by our electric company employees is planned. All of these events affect our ministry here in many ways.
Heavenly Father, we lay these trying days at your feet. These people desperately need your Son Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to save them. Please protect your servants in these countries.
We're in USA from March - June 2007
Tue, 16 Jan 2007
Sue and I will be speaking in International worker Conferences in USA in March. She will have ten churches in Georgia. Joshua and I will have ten churches in North Carolina. I'll be teaching Joshua school at the same time. Lots of prayer needed there! We'll be on a three month Home Assignment in Omaha from April - June 2007. We'll need to borrow a couple vehicles and house sit or rent a home or apartment. Let us know about anything available to us!
We had hoped to see John in Omaha, but Friday he wrote us to let us know his Unit's deployment in Iraq was extended until some time in July. Can you see our tears? God knows what's best!
Heavenly Father, we trust You to work out all the details for the Farho's tour ministries in Georgia and North Carolina. Provide the best vehicles and a home for them in Omaha. Protect John as he continues on in Iraq.
Lots of fun parties this week!
Tue, 9 Jan 2007
We've had lots of events to celebrate. Joshua turned nine on Saturday. He loved his party at the Go Kart Ranch. Fauzi turned 49 and quit smoking cigarettes on Sunday. We had our 23rd wedding anniversary on Sunday. Wednesday, Georges will turn 43 years old. George especially asks for your prayers. On Saturday one of his two delivery vans burned up. He wants to know what God is trying to teach him.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the growth that we see in each one's lives. Give Fauzi strength as he quits smoking. Give George wisdom about how to make deliveries without his van. Fill all these new years of life with great joy and blessing!
Happy New Year and Malaria Season in Abidjan
Tue, 02 Jan 2007
May God bless you with a new year filled with wonder at His goodness and overflowing with His love! This time of the year is filled with benedictions shared with everyone you meet. It is very rude to go into a store and ask for what you want without first sharing benedictions for the new year. This will continue for most of the month of January.
It is also Malaria season here in Abidjan. Malaria is very dangerous, killing about two million Africans a year. Our neighbor Michel and Sue both have bad headaches tonight, which is one of Malaria's symptoms. Learn more at http://www.Farho.net/malaria
Heavenly Father, we pray for your healing touch on Michel and Sue. We pray that You would protect Mike, Sue, and Joshua from Malaria.
