Visitors, Bishop, Veterans

We learned a lot and were very encouraged by our visitors, Bob and Craig, from USA. As we visited and prayed at some of the most famous Christian and Muslim locations in North Africa, our hearts were touched forever. Yesterday, we had an encouraging visit with the Bishop of Tunisia in Tunis. He provides the Sousse Church a sanctuary for worship on

Joshua in the cemetery
Sundays. Tomorrow, we drive to Carthage, north of Tunis, to a memorial service at the 27-acre North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Tunisia where 2,841 of our American military dead are buried. They gave their lives to liberate North Africans from Nazi tyranny. Read more at the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial website

Heavenly Father, comfort our grieving veterans and their families. Remind us daily about their sacrifices and their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Bless the Farhos with a safe round trip to Tunis.

Grateful for your partnership in prayer,
Mike and Sue Farho

1st Saturday of Ramadan 2009

Today is the first Saturday of Ramadan. Muslims fast, no food and liquids, for all daylight hours. As we made our visits all the cafes we saw were empty. Must be a hard 30 days for them and restaurants. At night, Muslims try to eat as a family during this holy month. They've shared with us that family unity is the main thing they enjoy about Ramadan.

Heavenly Father, we trust You to open doors and hearts for Mike and Sue everywhere they go. Encourage Sue as she is sharing about her experience of Your faithfulness in our family and ministry tomorrow at church.

Send us your questions, advice, comments or prayer requests!

Ramadan Karim

Wish your Muslim friends, neighbors and co-workers a happy Ramadan. Kindness is so important in our relationships. We don't know what Ramadan will be like here in Sousse. It will be our first time starting this week. We're told to expect all the restaurants and cafes to be closed during the days. We wonder where tourists will eat!

Heavenly Father, make the Farhos a real blessing to their Muslim neighbors. Give them patience as life will change dramatically in Sousse during Ramadan.

Ramadan is over

The fasting month of Ramadan finishes with the celebration of Feast of Breaking the Fast (Eid al-Fitr), or the Little Feast (al-Eid saghir). It occurs at the conclusion of Ramadan and is held on the first day of the month of Shawwal. For most Sunni Muslims, that was today. For most Shi'a Muslims, that will be tomorrow. West African Muslims are mostly Sunni, so today was a legal holiday in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, where nearly 50% of the population is Muslim. The Lebanese population here is mostly Shi'a Muslim, so they will celebrate their Little Feast tomorrow. Learn more about Islam at our website: http://islam.farho.net

Heavenly Father, we ask You to reveal yourself to Muslims through dreams and visions. Open Your arms to them in new and wonderful ways, so they can trust in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, for forgiveness.

What is Ramadan?

Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotos_dos_ornelas/
Ramadan in 2008 (or the Islamic year of 1429) is September 1-30. Dates may vary according to the sighting of the moon. It is the third pillar of Islam, when Muslims around the world celebrate the holiest month of their year. During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims from all continents unite in a period of sunrise to sunset fasting and spiritual reflection. Our friends tell us that one of the most important aspects of Ramadan for them is an increase in commitment to their families.

Heavenly Father, during this holy time for Muslims give them dreams and visions of our Savior Jesus Christ. As they discipline themselves and resist temptation, open their hearts to their need for the Savior.

Lebanese Muslims Mourning

CNN News Photo

When a Lebanese Muslim dies, they are normally buried within 24 hours, with their head facing towards Mecca.

The day of their death begins several periods of mourning.
  • Their spouses and immediate family begin a one year mourning period. During this time they wear only black.
  • Relatives beyond the immediate family set aside 40 days for mourning.
  • Friends often observe 7 days of mourning.
  • There is often a country-wide 3 day mourning period for important personalities or government officials. The outward sign of mourning is to wear only black.
  • The Qur'an prohibits widows to engage themselves in a new marriage for 4 lunar months and 10 days, after the death of their husbands.
Heavenly Father, help Mike and Sue to share Your love and compassion with those who are mourning. Give them wisdom and grace as they serve You in Abidjan.

Hyame has Malaria

It was a very difficult week for Hyame.
  • Her brother died on Friday morning.
  • She rushed down from Bouake to be at his funeral on Saturday morning. Muslims do their best to bury their dead within 24 hours.
  • Now she is sick in bed with Malaria.
Heavenly Father, heal her body and comfort her as she grieves the loss of her brother.

Joshua's school books arrived with huge bill

Joshua's 5th grade homeschool books arrived FedEx from USA on Thursday. The transit bill was $351 on $860 of books. We sent out a quick prayer request on our mini Blog. "I need to go negotiate with the duty office today! Pray!!" Then we went to pick up his books. We negotiated the bill of $351 to $22. Only $63 was duty, which was removed. We gave the FedEx man a New Testament, as we thanked him for his help. He said, "I'm a Muslim, but I'm going to read this Bible and carry it with me everywhere I go!"

As we were loading Joshua's books into our car, another FedEx worker asked me if I could bring him a New Testament. So I went back there today with two more New Testaments. I spent about an hour visiting with the duty agent.

Heavenly Father, may these seeds of Your Word sprout healthy souls for eternity. Thank You for making it possible to reduce that huge transit bill to a small expense.

The most popular pages at our website are about the Daniel Fast. Over the last week, those pages have been viewed 24,874 times. Why is the Daniel Fast so popular? Many people start out the New Year with a 21 day Daniel Fast. It is their way of giving their "First Fruits" to the Lord. It is basically a vegan diet, avoiding meats, processed foods and sugar.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that many of these visitors to Farho.net are joining the Farho prayer team. Encourage us as we continue to pray for Muslims who don't know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Take a few minutes to visit our Daniel Fast pages!
